Description

Crispy, golden fried herring coated in a wholesome oat crust—crunchy on the outside, tender and flavorful inside, and perfect for a rustic seafood meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh herring fillets
  • 1 cup rolled oats (quick or old-fashioned, finely crushed)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk or water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or sunflower)
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat herring fillets dry and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  2. Set up a breading station: flour in one bowl, beaten eggs mixed with milk in a second bowl, and crushed oats mixed with paprika and garlic powder in a third bowl.
  3. Dredge each herring fillet in flour, shaking off excess.
  4. Dip into the egg mixture, then press firmly into the oat coating.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
  6. Fry herring fillets for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve hot with lemon wedges and optional dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Crush oats finely for better coating adhesion.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to keep the crust crispy.
  • Serve with tartar sauce, yogurt-dill sauce, or mustard.
  • Can be shallow-fried or pan-fried.
