Description
Crispy, golden fried herring coated in a wholesome oat crust—crunchy on the outside, tender and flavorful inside, and perfect for a rustic seafood meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh herring fillets
- 1 cup rolled oats (quick or old-fashioned, finely crushed)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tbsp milk or water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Oil for frying (vegetable or sunflower)
- Lemon wedges, for serving
Instructions
- Pat herring fillets dry and season lightly with salt and pepper.
- Set up a breading station: flour in one bowl, beaten eggs mixed with milk in a second bowl, and crushed oats mixed with paprika and garlic powder in a third bowl.
- Dredge each herring fillet in flour, shaking off excess.
- Dip into the egg mixture, then press firmly into the oat coating.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
- Fry herring fillets for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Serve hot with lemon wedges and optional dipping sauce.
Notes
- Crush oats finely for better coating adhesion.
- Do not overcrowd the pan to keep the crust crispy.
- Serve with tartar sauce, yogurt-dill sauce, or mustard.
- Can be shallow-fried or pan-fried.
