Description

Golden, flaky hand pies filled with sweet fruit filling and fried to crispy perfection, a classic Southern treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 1 cup fruit filling (apple, peach, or cherry)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional, for filling)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional, for filling)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add ice water gradually, mixing until dough forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
  3. On a floured surface, roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into circles (about 4–5 inches wide).
  4. Place 1–2 tablespoons of fruit filling in the center of each circle.
  5. Fold dough over to form a half-moon. Seal edges by pressing with a fork.
  6. Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry pies in batches until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  8. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • You can use canned pie filling or homemade fruit filling.
  • Make sure edges are sealed well to prevent filling from leaking.
  • For extra flavor, drizzle with glaze made from powdered sugar and milk.
