Description
Golden, flaky hand pies filled with sweet fruit filling and fried to crispy perfection, a classic Southern treat.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup ice water
- 1 cup fruit filling (apple, peach, or cherry)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional, for filling)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional, for filling)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add ice water gradually, mixing until dough forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
- On a floured surface, roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into circles (about 4–5 inches wide).
- Place 1–2 tablespoons of fruit filling in the center of each circle.
- Fold dough over to form a half-moon. Seal edges by pressing with a fork.
- Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry pies in batches until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
Notes
- You can use canned pie filling or homemade fruit filling.
- Make sure edges are sealed well to prevent filling from leaking.
- For extra flavor, drizzle with glaze made from powdered sugar and milk.
